Mark Gould is one of the best known trumpeters of his generation. He was principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra from 1974-2003 and has been on the faculty of the Juilliard School since 1982. He joined the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music in September 2004 and has recently joined the faculty of the New School and Mannes Conservatory of Music.   Mr. Gould has been very active as a trumpet soloist and conductor. He has conducted and performed as soloist with the Seattle Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Colorado Philharmonic, Buffalo Symphony, The Juilliard Wind Ensemble, The Waterloo Festival, The Caramoor Festival, The Strings Music Festival and the Vermont Mozart Festival Orchestra. In 2001, he was the conductor of the Juilliard Wind Ensemble in the recording: “Shadowcatcher”, on NEW WORLD RECORDS, which features the work of Juilliard composers, Eric Ewazen and William Schuman. More recently, in September 2004, he made his conducting debut with the Manhattan School of Music Wind Ensemble in a program of Stravinsky, Antheil and Frank Zappa. In 2005, he conducted the MSM wind ensemble in a program of Grainger, Ligeti, and Bernstein. From 2005-2007, Mr. Gould served as the music director of the Brass Band of Battle Creek, America’s premiere brass band. Mark Gould has led an active life in chamber music. He is the director of The New York Trumpet Ensemble and has recorded 6 albums with them. The most recent, “All Praise Be Thine” has just been released on the 8 Bells Label. He has appeared and recorded with numerous high profile chamber music groups and ensembles. He has been a frequent guest with Speculum Musicae, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, The MET Chamber Ensemble, Empire Brass, Canadian Brass, Boston Brass, Summit Brass, The Graham Ashton Brass Ensemble and Extension Ensemble. Mr. Gould has performed as a soloist on many recordings.. His most recent is Café 1930, an album of trumpet and guitar music on ANGEL/EMI. As principal trumpet of the MET, he participated in over 40 “Live from Lincoln Center” performances on PBS and numerous audio recordings of operas and symphonic works under the direction of James Levine, among which were the grammy winning recordings of THE RING OF THE NIBELUNG and PARSIFAL for DEUTSHCE GRAMMOPHON. He has performed and recorded Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #2 with Philharmonia Virtuosi for SONY RECORDS.In 2004, Mr. Gould released an album with his performance art ensemble, PINK BABY MONSTER. An amalgam of rap, electronic music, opera, jazz and assorted contemporary musical forms, it is a meditation on American culture. In 2007, PBM premiered his opera, “Desert Jews, From Jesus to Oppenheimer”. In 2005, he presented “The Disappearance of Henry Pigeon” at the Manhattan School of Music, a staged multi-media performance, conceived by Mr. Gould and noted visual artist, Michael Zansky. Their video, “I Live For Art” was part of the Terrorvision exhibit at EXITART which toured many prestigious galleries throughout the U.S and Europe and is now available for viewing on Youtube. Mr. Gould has been a member of the faculty of The Juilliard School since 1982. He joined the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music in 2003. Mr. Gould’s students play in many of the major orchestras and chamber ensembles of the world, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, Seattle Symphony, New York Brass Quintet, Canadian Brass, Empire Brass, Boston Brass, Meridian Arts Ensemble, Extension Ensemble, New York Big Brass and Burning River Brass. He is a much sought after teacher throughout the world and has spent considerable time in Japan and Europe as a teacher and clinician.Mr. Gould has been on the Mannes faculty since 2016. He has directed the COPA orchestra in the New School’s Silent Film series in a series of Charlie Chaplin films, “Gold Rush”, “City Lights” and “Modern Times”. In 2019, Mr. Gould released his book, "Orchestra Confidential: A Survival Guide For Musicians and Those Who Love Them",  a humorous look a life in the orchestra.  In 2021 qPress will release his latest book, "On Music: Playing, Studying, Teaching and Preparing for the Future".
